Coronavirus (COVID-19): Maintaining a Safe and Effective Care Environment

A safe and effective care environment is our highest priority, and Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) hospitals and medical practices have undertaken necessary steps to protect our patients and workforce as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation evolves.

On this site, you will find the most up-to-date information on our patient and visitor guidelines, as well as details about testing that is being conducted on some of our hospital campuses, by appointment only. In addition, information is available on how to donate supplies or make a contribution to our health network.

Our Plans for Care

All WMCHealth hospitals and medical practices have long-standing and the most up-to-date protocols in place to respond to infectious diseases. These protocols include, but are not limited to:

  • Strict adherence to care guidelines
  • Protective attire
  • The use of negative-pressure environments to contain airborne pathogens.
  • We routinely train our staff on these protocols and protocol adherence is monitored by infection prevention specialists.

As an added safety precaution, multilingual signs are present at key hospital entry points asking patients and visitors to share their potential for exposures, such as recent travel, symptoms and local exposure.

If a patient arrives at a WMCHealth member hospital or medical practice with a suspicion of COVID-19 exposure or if key symptoms are present, the patient will be masked and escorted to an isolated and contained area for additional evaluation and care in cooperation with public health agencies, such as the New York State Department of Health (DOH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The COVID-19 anxiety and research hotline is staffed by trained medical personnel that are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide free confidential telephone counseling services for members of the community and staff experiencing anxiety and depression as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effective May 12, 2021, visitation will be changed to two (2) designated support people for all adult patients during visiting hours of 2 to 6 p.m. 

The designated support person must be 18 years of age or older.

Two support people will be able to accompany patients during emergency room care, and during intake and discharge for ambulatory surgeries and procedures.

Exceptions to the above are allowed for:

  • Pediatric patients 22 years of age and under (two (2) designated support people 24/7)
  • Labor and delivery (one (1) birth partner and one (1) doula visitation 24/7) and 2nd designated support person during regular visiting hour of 2 to 6 p.m.
  • End-of-life and extenuating circumstances visitation, as well as patients travelling from outside New York for care that cannot be delayed. 
  • Behavioral Health units have visitation guidelines which are provided to patients and families upon admission.


All visitors, including designated support people, must be screened for symptoms and recent travel. Any visitor subject to quarantine restrictions for recent travel domestically or abroad, will not be allowed visitation. This includes quarantine orders specific to New York State available at

Visitors should remain in patient rooms at all times and exit the campus when their visitation time or accompaniment is over.

All hospital, state and federal guidelines regarding infection control practices must be followed.

For patients’ using personal devices for communication with family and friends: All WMCHealth policies must be adhered to regarding patient photography and recording/videotaping. Any live video streaming between patients and family/friends must be done with the patient’s and WMCHealth approval, be time limited, should not include clinical procedures or staff and should not interfere with WMCHealth clinical treatment or operations.

Required Mask Use        

For the health and safety of our patients and workforce, all employees must wear procedure masks inside most of our buildings and units that house patients, in addition to other personal protective equipment requirements.

While visitation is extremely limited, all visitors will be issued masks and must wear them while inside our buildings.

Thermal Scanning 

We are now using thermal scanning to check all approved visitors for fever.  To protect the health and safety of our patients and our workforce, you must also protect your own health to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). 

  • WMCHealth protocols during this time require that all visitors are fever-free for at least 72 hours before entering the hospital.

While a fever is a symptom of COVID-19 – it can also be a symptom of many other illnesses. If you are concerned about your fever, please reach out directly to your primary care physician. We will continue to scan any approved visitors for fever. Once you are fever free for 72 hours and without symptoms of illness, you can return for screening, and then visitation after screening.

To help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) is making several temporary changes to our ambulatory and outpatient services to ensure that we are able to care for our patients in a safe and effective care environment in our hospitals and medical practices.

WMCHealth offers both COVID-19 diagnostic and antibody testing at sites in Valhalla, Poughkeepsie, Kingston and Margaretville



Monoclonal Antibody Therapy

For Patients

People with COVID-19 may have mild symptoms that do not require oxygen therapy or hospitalization. There are limited options for the treatment of mild COVID-19. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has given emergency use authorization (EUA) for the use of investigational medications called COVID-19 Monoclonal Antibodies. Monoclonal antibodies are proteins made in a lab that mimic the antibodies the body normally produces in response to an infection. The goal of the COVID19 Monoclonal Antibodies is to bridge the gap between the time when someone is initially infected and when the body is able to fend of the virus by itself. This helps prevent the progression to more severe disease. These medications are administered intravenously usually within 10 days of the onset of symptoms. Westchester Medical Center is providing this service.

If you have COVID19 and feel you may benefit from this treatment, have your health provider make a referral to Westchester Medical Center by calling 914.202.4530 or completing the online request formReferral requests are processed Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. After hours online referrals will be processed during the next business day.

For Providers

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19.

Patients are eligible for COVID-19 antibodies if they meet ALL of the following criteria:

  1. Adults and pediatric patients who are 12 years of age and older weighing at least 40 kg.

  2. Confirmed SARS-CoV-2 PCR or antigen test.

  3. Symptoms consistent with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 disease.

  4. Not hospitalized for the treatment of COVID-19 (may be hospitalized for other conditions).

  5. High risk of disease progression with AT LEAST ONE of the below criteria:


High Risk defined by meeting at least ONE of the following criteria:             

  • Age ≥ 65 years old
  • Body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 (kg/m2) or BMI ≥85th percentile for age and gender (≤17yrs)
  • Pregnancy
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Chronic Liver Disease
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Immunosuppressive disease or treatment
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Hypertension
  • Chronic Lung Diseases
  • Hemoglobinopathies (Sickle Cell and Thalassemia)
  • Neurodevelopmental and Neurological Disease
  • Medical-related technological dependence disease
  • Current or former smoker

Sometimes referred to as “post-Covid syndrome” this is a very real health issue. And, it is treatable.
